Ann Arbor vs.\u00a0Annarbour<\/span><\/h2>\n

\nIt’s easy to assume that Ann Arbor was just named for our many trees. And while they\u00a0definitely played\u00a0a part, did you know that the “Ann” in our name\u00a0actually came\u00a0from the names of our founders’ wives? Legend has it that\u00a0Ann Arbor\u00a0founders\u00a0John Allen and Elisha Walker Rumsey\u00a0named the town after their wives, Ann Allen and Mary Ann Rumsey after noticing they were fond of sitting under a wild grape arbor\u00a0on their property.\u00a0John and Elisha were supposedly so enamored by the idyllic sight of their wives relaxing in the shade of that arbor, they decided their newly purchased land should be named “Ann’s Arbor,” later converted to\u00a0Annarbour\u00a0and then, finally, Ann Arbor.\u00a0<\/span>\n<\/div>\n

We’re home to the largest stadium\u00a0in the country<\/span><\/h2>\n<\/div>\n
\nMichigan Stadium<\/span><\/a>, or the Big House, is the football stadium for the\u00a0<\/span>University of Michigan<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0And while the sea of maize and blue is\u00a0definitely an\u00a0incredible sight on game day, you probably never realized that Michigan Stadium is\u00a0actually\u00a0the\u00a0largest stadium in the United States\u00a0and, unbeknownst to many,\u00a0is\u00a0also the third-largest stadium in the entire world! The official capacity of the stadium as of 2013 is 107,601 but has hosted crowds in excess of 115,000\u00a0people.\u00a0<\/span>\n<\/div>\n

\n

As well as one of the oldest arts organizations in Michigan<\/span><\/h2>\n

\"Ann-Arbor-Art-Center-02\"<\/a>\n<\/div>\n

\nFounded in 1909, the\u00a0<\/span>Ann Arbor Art Center<\/span><\/a>\u00a0is the third-oldest arts organization in Michigan. In fact, it’s even older than the University of Michigan academic arts curriculum!\u00a0These days, the AAAC is our local headquarters\u00a0for enjoying art\u00a0exhibitions, connecting with local artists, and learning new art skills. Their many educational\u00a0experiences are available for all ages and topics cover everything from painting and ceramics to jewelry making and metalsmithing!\u00a0<\/span>Click here<\/span><\/a>\u00a0to explore this month’s calendar.<\/span>\n<\/div>\n

The foundation of the\u00a0<\/span>Peace Corps<\/span><\/a>\u00a0was laid on the steps of the Michigan Union in 1960<\/span><\/h2>\n<\/div>\n
\nOne of the signature achievements of President John F. Kennedy was\u00a0creating the\u00a0Peace Corps, a now famous international volunteer organization.\u00a0But what\u00a0isn’t\u00a0well known is how the organization was created.\u00a0After a day of campaigning for the presidency, Senator John F. Kennedy arrived at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor on\u00a0the early morning of\u00a0October 14,\u00a01960, to get some sleep.\u00a0However,\u00a010,000 students at the university were waiting to hear the presidential candidate speak.\u00a0So, on the steps of the Michigan Union at two in the morning, JFK spoke to them. One of the things he proposed\u00a0that morning\u00a0was the foundation for the Peace Corp, a bold new\u00a0experiment\u00a0in public service. How many of them, he asked, would be willing to\u00a0willing to serve their country and the cause of peace by living and working in the developing world?\u00a0Their reaction was, unsurprisingly,\u00a0very enthusiastic.\u00a0<\/span>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Ann Arbor was\u00a0a\u00a0birthplace of the White Panther Party<\/span><\/h2>\n<\/div>\n
\nIn 1966 in Oakland, California,\u00a0the Black Panther Party was formed by college students Bobby Seale and Huey P. Newton to challenge police brutality in the city. Over the years, the organization\u00a0expanded to offer programs to address food injustice, health clinics for education,\u00a0and much more. In 1968,\u00a0after being asked how white people could support The Black Panthers in an interview, Newton replied that they could create a White Panther Party. And the\u00a0members the Detroit Artists Workshop did just that, creating an anti-racism group\u00a0that worked throughout Detroit and Ann Arbor for several years.\u00a0<\/span>\n<\/div>\n

\n

You can thank Ann Arbor for your cubicle<\/span><\/h2>\n

\nWhether you hate them or love them,\u00a0there’s\u00a0no denying the impact cubicles have had on the world. Now\u00a0synonymous\u00a0with\u00a0the idea of office work, cubicles were\u00a0actually originally\u00a0intended to liberate office workers. The concept was\u00a0developed\u00a0here in Ann Arbor at the research center of\u00a0<\/span>Herman Miller Inc.<\/span><\/a>\u00a0The invention of Robert Propst, a brilliant local inventor, the walls were first\u00a0conceived\u00a0as an alternative to the open workrooms that\u00a0lacked\u00a0privacy\u00a0or personality.\u00a0Instead of the cubes we know today,\u00a0Propst pictured an Ikea-style desk space that the user could\u00a0rearrange\u00a0at will, with only\u00a0three walls to still allow for coworker interaction.\u00a0Unfortunately, his idea was too expensive and difficult to put together, causing the company to go with a cheaper alternative that wound up taking the world by storm.\u00a0<\/span>\n<\/div>\n

And\u00a0<\/span>Domino’s\u00a0Pizza<\/span><\/a><\/h2>\n<\/div>\n
\nAnn Arbor has been home to many large, well-known corporations from Borders to\u00a0<\/span>Google AdWords<\/span><\/a>\u00a0and more. But one of the most popular companies founded here is\u00a0Domino’s\u00a0Pizza! The mega pizza chain got its start in\u00a0<\/span>Ypsilanti<\/span><\/a>\u00a0in 1960, when brothers Tom and James Monaghan took over a small\u00a0pizzeria\u00a0that had\u00a0been owned by Dominick DeVarti.\u00a0In just a few years, Tom Monaghan had taken over the area, opening two more pizzerias in the same county.\u00a0And in\u00a01965, they changed their name to Domino’s. Today, Domino’s is one of the largest pizza chains in the world, with more than 17,000 locations currently in operation.\u00a0But even after all that expansion, they haven’t forgotten their roots! You can find their headquarters here in Ann Arbor with the three dots on their logo representing those first three stores.\u00a0<\/span>\n<\/div>\n

We are a very\u00a0educated\u00a0city<\/span><\/h2>\n

\nAnn Arbor is home to the world-renowned University of Michigan, so it’s no surprise that we’re a\u00a0pretty\u00a0well-educated\u00a0community.\u00a0In fact, we were even named the\u00a0<\/span>#1 Most Educated City in America by WalletHub in 2020<\/span><\/a>!\u00a0And, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, 70.4% of Ann Arbor residents hold a\u00a0Bachelor’s\u00a0Degree\u00a0or higher.<\/span>

Nickels Arcade<\/span><\/a>\u00a0is one of just a few glass-roofed shopping galleries in the country<\/span><\/h2>\n<\/div>\n
\nLocated in downtown Ann Arbor and adjacent to the University of Michigan campus,\u00a0the glass-roofed\u00a0Nickels Arcade is home to some of the best cafes and shops in town. Now over 100 years old, the covered mall consists of a three-story, three-bay open portico flanked with store and office blocks\u00a0and is one of the few glass-roofed shopping galleries left in the country!\u00a0<\/span>\n<\/div>\n

The\u00a0<\/span>Ann Arbor Film Festival<\/span><\/a>\u00a0has a star-studded history<\/span><\/h2>\n

\nThe annual Ann Arbor Film Festival isn\u2019t just a small community event. It\u2019s\u00a0actually one\u00a0of the only Academy Award qualifying festivals in the United States. Each year, the festival presents 40 programs with more than 180 films from over 20 countries that highlight all lengths and genres, including experimental, animation, documentary, fiction and performance-based works. It\u2019s hosted\u00a0a number of\u00a0famous guests over the years, including Andy Warhol, Yoko Ono, George Lucas and Gus Van Sant.<\/span>\n<\/div>\n

Some of our oldest houses have been here since 1832<\/span><\/h2>\n<\/div>\n
\nEven after years of\u00a0university\u00a0and town expansion, there are still 18 houses in Ann Arbor that remain from its early days as a village in 1837!\u00a0The oldest is the Anson Brown Building, previously known as the Exchange Block, which was built in 1832.\u00a0Most recently, the building housed the St. Vincent De Paul Thrift Store which just closed last year.
